Just recently, in return for a FREE audiobook version of my book “The Elevator“, I got a SCATHING review. I mean scathing! Among many things it made me wonder, “Well, if it was that bad why did you finish it!?” Somethings have no explanation…or do they?
In my opinion one of the things that drove this reviewer to such negativity was, in their words, “…the plot…was underdeveloped…with a lot of conspiracy theory involved.” Hmmm. I didn’t realize that what I was writing about was ‘theory’. Maybe it was because the reviewer wasn’t able to have the print version where I explain my plot and the technology used in the book. Maybe it was because they weren’t able to see the four pages of bibliographic links showing actual, real articles revealing where I got my ‘conspiracy theory’. I find it odd that they found it odd that I would have “…the ever present ‘Big Brother’ spying on US citizen…” in my book.
Nevertheless, I remained unfettered and undeterred in my desire to write and communicate. While I don’t claim to be an “amazing author” or even a great one, I do know that there was at least one good aspect to the story which this reviewer seemed incapable of finding. Just last night I heard from a very experienced reader that bought my book and stated to me, “keep writing, don’t stop…the book is a page-turner…” Wow! That made me feel better.
So, what do I conclude about this bad review (scathing)? I really must toy with the idea of concluding that the individual must have their head in the sand!?
I literally hold in my hand yesterday’s copy of the Wall Street Journal. On the front page, centerpiece are these words for a headline: “U.S. Spies on Millions of Cars”. How is that for ‘conspiracy’? That ‘theory’ is in my book – one of the underpinning plots, though this is not the first time I have read about it in the news. Texas toyed with this idea around three years ago, while New York did as well, but it has actually been a secret reality since 2008. The article reads:
The Justice Department has been building a national database to track in REAL TIME* the movement of vehicles around the U.S., a secret domestic intelligence-gathering program that scans and stores hundreds of millions of records about motorists…run by Drug Enforcement Administration…the database’s use has expanded to HUNT* for vehicles associated with numerous other potential crimes [broad strokes here]…What hasn’t been previously disclosed is that the DEA has spent years working to expand the database “throughout the United States,”… Many state and local law-enforcement agencies are accessing the database for a variety of investigations…local officials who can track vehicles in real time on major roadways…It is unclear if any court oversees or approves the intelligence-gathering. A spokesman…said…”It is not new that the DEA uses the license-plate reader program to arrest criminals and stop the flow of drugs in areas of high trafficking intensity.”…The DEA program collects data about vehicle movements, including time, direction and location, from high-tech cameras placed strategically on major highways. Many devices also record visual images of drivers and passengers, which are sometimes clear enough for investigators to confirm identities…”Any database that collects detailed location information about Americans not suspected of crimes raises very serious privacy questions,” said Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst at the ACLU. “It’s unconscionable that technology with such far-reaching potential would be deployed in such secrecy…” …The El Paso Intelligence Center…is staffed around the clock to both take in and send out information about “hits” on requested license plates.
All Emphasis added. You can read the article using the link above (if you have a subscription -which is why I rewrote so much of it here.). So, does putting this into a plot add up to “conspiracy theory”? Absolutely not! It is real life ladies and gentlemen, real life! To call it ‘conspiracy’ is to put our head in the sand, and THAT is WHY I WROTE THE BOOK!!
Maybe the plot(s) do bear explanation for the casual reader or one that is new to the Niagara of developing “conspiracies” around the world. To that end I will be, as time permits, writing small blogs about the technology and plots in my book. I hope you will stay tuned!
