Our good friends in SE Texas know what the word “evacuation” and “disaster” truly mean, having been through multiple massive hurricanes in the last decade. When they heard Kamiah was on fire their prayers and hearts were with us. Yet, that wasn’t all…a group of men organized to come help with fires, if they are still burning, assistance, cooking meals, and cleaning up areas for rebuilding homes that have been destroyed by the Clearwater River Complex Fire(s).
They have relief gear, coolers, tools, water tanks, trailers, super tanker truck and a heart to help.
Another day of firefighting has been completed successfully (now the night crew) more resources being focused as more fires are being controlled and dealt with. The pace is still hectic, but it has a different feeling to the work.
From all indications, the Church Canyon backburn administered by the Navajo Hotshots has been successful. At least we know it wasn’t disastrous as the others were. A substantial rumor has it that the entire razing and evacuation that we experienced Friday was due to a poorly executed and controlled backburn. I will try to get the truth and details.
I do know the Bethman Addition, West Kamiah, and Pine Ridge Subdivision Stage 3 evacuations were due to this backburn above that was poorly done and executed too late in the day when the relative humidity drops as temperatures rise.
On a fire just below and right across the street we called in a D7 operator and one of our guys, Dickson Construction owner, Jared Dickson brough a John Deere 460 from Orofino, generously lent to us from the owners of Riverview Construction. Fire lines were cut in around the perimeter of the blaze that nearly put our properties in jeopardy today. It was spotted by one of our group on a patrol. Three sawyers took out trees ahead of the dozer and the fire was successfully contained. A dozer line is being put in around over a hundred acres across the road tonight should the Shenandoah Fire leap their fire break. Though at last inspection it too was nearly entirely contained, as best I know without a lost home.
I leave tonight for an event in Dallas, TX that has been schedule for some time. I truly have mixed feelings about leaving and apart cancelled, but our group has got an amazing firefighting operation going on at this point and our Southern friends will hit town in the morning. A BIG shout out to them!!
